Sbigoli Terrecotte is an old Florentine shop founded in 1857. It used to sell mainly plaster objects and pottery for gardens. After the flood that washed over Florence in 1966, the shop was purchased by Valentino and Antonella Adami who introduced ceramics as their main product.
In 1970 Antonella began to make her own pottery in the studio at the back of the shop and she and her daughter Lorenza have now specialized in a variety of objects from table sets to decorative ceramic pieces like plates for hanging, lamp bases, vases for flowers and so on. Antonella Chini Adami is the daughter of the well-known ceramist and painter Tito Chini. She has studied ceramics since she was very young, as she was expected to work in the family ceramic factory in Borgo San Lorenzo, a small town close to Florence. Unfortunately, World War II changed those expectations and Antonella "rediscovered" her own artistic talent many years later with the help and encouragement of her husband Valentino. Her patterns come from old Tuscan designs, from her childhood experience, and from the Tuscan country were she had long lived.
Valentino helps in stacking and firing the electric kiln and undertakes the commercial aspects of the business like buying ceramics from carefully selected artisans. In this part of the business operation, he is helped by their other daughter, Chiara, who also works directly with their many customers around the world, assisting with their orders and shipments.
The youngest daughter, Lorenza, started her career on the potter's wheel and as ceramic decorator. She has now specialized in the latter. She paints manly classical designs according to the Tuscan tradition, but she also loves trying new techniques and designs: from South America and the Far East, but always with a personal touch that gives to each piece its unique character.
Sbigoli is not only a shop, but also a unique and special family endeavour, where with the help of the Adami's, you can have own tastes and needs personally addressed. Whether it's the design and production of your own pattern, or the sourcing of high quality items from their esteemed selected artisans, the Adami family will work to your complete satisfaction and provide you with years of enjoyment from the incredible art form of their Italian ceramics.
